Multilingual websites

In short

A multilingual website presents your company in several languages, with content adapted and optimised for each market. PragaWeb designs it so that Google and foreign customers find and understand it.

A multilingual website is a website available in two or more languages, where each version is designed for a specific market: adapted copy, local keywords, and contact details and information that matter in that country. PragaWeb builds multilingual websites for companies that export, have customers or suppliers abroad or want to enter new European markets.

Translating pages is not enough. An effective multilingual site is built so that Google shows the right version to each user, AI engines quote the content in the searcher’s language and you can update every language without hassle.

When you need a multilingual website

  • A significant share of your customers, or the ones you want, speak another language.
  • You exhibit at international trade fairs and the people you meet there cannot find information in their language.
  • You already have a translated site, but the foreign versions bring neither visits nor enquiries.
  • Your translations date back a few years and no longer match the main version.
  • You use a live machine translation plug-in and the result does not represent you.
  • You want to open a branch or a distributor network in a new country.

What we build

  • Language and market strategy: together we choose which languages and countries you really need, and whether some content should change from one market to another.
  • URL structure: usually subfolders per language (such as /en/ or /de/), simple to manage and clear for search engines.
  • Hreflang tags: technical signals that tell Google which version to show for each language or country, so your pages do not compete with each other.
  • Translation and localisation: localisation adapts copy, examples, units, date formats and cultural references to the target audience. We publish copy reviewed by people, not raw machine translation.
  • Keyword research per market: people in Germany or France do not search using a literal translation of your Italian or English terms.
  • Accessible language switcher: easy to find and usable with a keyboard and screen readers, with each page’s language correctly declared in the code.
  • Content management: an admin panel that links the versions of each page, so you can see at a glance what still needs translating.
  • Forms and notifications in the visitor’s language, with enquiries routed to the right person in your team.

How we work

  1. Market analysis: priority countries, local competitors and how your foreign customers search.
  2. Architecture: we define URL structure, launch languages and the pages to localise first.
  3. Content in the main language: we write clear copy, which is also easier to translate well.
  4. Translation and review: professional translation or review of your existing translations, with attention to your industry’s terminology.
  5. Build and international SEO setup: hreflang, sitemaps per language, localised meta tags and structured data.
  6. Checks: we test every version, the links between languages and indexing in Google Search Console.
  7. Evolution: we add languages and markets over time, guided by visit and enquiry data.

Technical choices

For WordPress sites we use established multilingual plug-ins such as WPML or Polylang; for custom-built sites we manage languages directly in the CMS and the code. We advise against relying only on machine translation generated on the fly in the browser: it is often not indexed and gives you no control over quality. AI can speed up a first draft, but every piece of published content is reviewed.

Timelines and costs: what they depend on

  • the number of languages and pages to translate;
  • how much content needs to change between markets;
  • whether there is a product catalogue or technical sheets to localise;
  • whether translations already exist or need to be produced;
  • any keyword research for each country.

It often makes sense to start with one or two languages and the most important pages, then expand. The proposal gives timelines and costs for each phase. If you sell online, the same approach applies to multilingual online stores, with prices, shipping and payments for each country.

Frequently asked questions

Is a machine translation plug-in enough for a multilingual website?

It can help internally, but it is not enough for a public site. On-the-fly machine translations are often not indexed and can get terminology wrong; we recommend copy reviewed by people.

How many languages should I have?

Those of the markets where you sell or really want to sell. It often makes sense to start with English and one or two priority languages, then add more based on results.

Do you provide the translations?

We can handle them or review translations you already have. Either way we check the terminology and SEO for each language.

Subfolders or separate domains for each country?

For most companies subfolders are the simplest and most effective choice. Separate national domains only make sense in specific cases, which we assess together.

Can I add a language later?

Yes. We design the site from the start to accommodate new languages, so adding one is mainly a matter of content.
